When looking at the CPALMS standards, I came across the 8th grade computer science standard: Investigate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications. I believe that this standard can be interpreted to mean to look at various AI tools, such as copilot or chat gpt, and look at how students can use is as a helpful tool in their learning. As a teacher, I would make sure to highlight academic integrity so that my students are fully aware of the consequences of using AI for wrongful purposes. I do feel ready to implement this standard in my own classroom since this class has taught me the consequences of using AI, including academic dishonesty and legal issues that copy right can result in.
A resource that I explored in the CPALMS educator toolkit was a tutorial that was connected to a fourth grade science standard. I like that the tutorial included engaging visuals and build in checks to make sure that it was understood. The tutorial included information on formative assessments that went along with the particular Florida standard. I think this feature is resourceful since it is organized by standard, which can help a lot of teachers for easily accessable information.
One lingering question that I have is about how teachers can effectively balance the use of AI and other tools with the digital divide. Not all students will have access to the same features as others. While it is super important to include lessons on technology and AI, not all students have access to it at home. I also wonder how we can effectively teach students to not rely as heavily on AI. A possible discussion question that I have is: how can teachers include AI in lessons that enhance learning but also respecting independent thinking and academic integrity?
